Harmonic doubles playout density with Spectrum X Plus and AI orchestration

Harmonic is showing the next-generation Spectrum X Plus media server at NAB 2026 from Booth W2831. The box doubles channel density to eight HD or two UHD channels per server and roughly halves the cost per channel versus prior generations, while supporting SDI and SMPTE ST 2110 I/O, GPU acceleration, HDR 3D LUT workflows, Dolby Atmos and MPEG-H immersive audio.

Playout economics are the story. Broadcasters running dozens of linear channels plus FAST feeds have been squeezed between flat revenue and flat hardware density; cutting the per-channel number roughly in half is the kind of concrete operational math buyers are pulling analysts aside to verify this week.

Harmonic is also launching an AI Orchestration Service that aggregates third-party and in-house AI functions, with NVIDIA-accelerated HD-to-UHD upscaling baked in. The company disclosed the first large production deployment of VOS Media Software on Red Hat OpenShift and the first production deployment of server-side in-stream advertising at a U.S. regional sports network. "Harmonic is bringing practical, deployable solutions that help media companies monetize more effectively in an increasingly IP- and AI-driven environment," said Gil Rudge, SVP Solutions and Americas Sales, Video.
